Party leaders urged to commit to building 90,000 social homes annually

Charities and housing organizations have called on major political parties to commit to building 90,000 social homes per year over the next decade.

This appeal, coordinated by Homeless Link and signed by 54 other groups focused on homelessness and housing, also urges the next government to work collaboratively across party lines to end homelessness.

Government data reveals that over 100,000 households, including many families with children, are currently living in temporary accommodation. Additionally, rough sleeping has increased by 27% in the year leading up to autumn 2023.

The letter states: "From building social homes and introducing a robust Renters Reform Bill to ensuring the Local Housing Allowance keeps track with private sector rent levels, providing truly affordable housing for people on low incomes through a long-term plan is the single biggest step we can take to prevent homelessness, both now and in the future."
